Box truck buying guide
Updated October 2026
Box trucks power a lot of small trucking businesses, from local delivery to expedited freight.
Size and CDL
Box trucks with a gross vehicle weight rating of 26,001 pounds or more require a CDL to drive. Many 26-foot box trucks are rated just under that so they can be driven without one. Check the GVWR on the door sticker.
What to check
The box condition (roof leaks, floor, door rollers), the liftgate if it has one, the engine and transmission, brakes and tires. Ask how it was used; heavy city delivery causes more wear.
Match it to the work
Know whether your work needs a liftgate, a certain length, or a refrigerated box before you buy.
