Used semi truck buying checklist
Updated October 2026
A used truck can be a smart buy or an expensive mistake. The difference is usually what you check before you pay.
Paperwork first
Ask for the VIN and run a history report. Confirm the title is in the seller's name and free of liens, or that the lender will release it at sale. Ask for maintenance and repair records, and an engine report (an ECM download) if the seller can provide one.
Inspect it, or pay someone to
Have a mechanic you choose do a pre-purchase inspection. Check the engine, aftertreatment parts (DPF, EGR, DEF system), transmission, clutch, brakes, suspension, frame for cracks or welds, tires, and electrical. Look for leaks, smoke and warning lights.
Test drive
Drive it loaded if you can. Listen for knocks, watch the gauges, check how it shifts and brakes, and make sure the HVAC and sleeper work.
Run the numbers
Add the expected repairs to the price. Check the payment and the insurance cost before you commit. Use the free payment estimate on every listing, and our pre-purchase inspection checklist.
