Buying a truck from a private seller: financing, title and paperwork

Updated October 2026

Private sellers often have the best prices, but you handle more of the paperwork yourself.

Financing

Some lenders finance private-party truck sales; others only finance dealer sales. Get pre-approved before you shop so you know your budget, and ask how the lender pays the seller and handles the title.

If the seller still owes money

The seller's lender holds the title. The safest approach is to complete the sale at the seller's lender or have your lender pay it off directly, so the title is released properly.

The paperwork

Get the signed title, a bill of sale listing the price, date, VIN and both parties, and any release of lien. Check your state's rules for registration and sales tax. Our free bill of sale generator helps you fill one out.
